Cesarean Delivery

It Is The Method Of Delivering A Baby Through A Surgical Incision On The Abdomen And Then Through The Uterus.

Cesarean delivery is safe and has significantly reduced both fetal and maternal morbidity and mortality rates.

Cesarean delivery is done when the labour is contraindicated or vaginal delivery is found unsafe for the baby or mother.

Indications for cesarean delivery

Absolute (where vaginal delivery is not possible at all)

  • Contracted pelvis of mother or absolute cephalo pelvic disproportion
  • Central low lying placenta
  • Pelvic mass causing obstruction in descent of baby
  • Advanced carcinoma of cervix
  • Abnormal position of baby where baby is either lying transversely or in breech or brow presentation

Relative indication

  • Previous cesarean delivery
  • Non reassuring fetal heart rate
  • Failed or no progress of labour
  • Multiple pregnancy (Twins or triplets or so on..)
  • Severe hypertension leading to convulsions in mother
  • Heavy bleeding due to separation of placenta before delivery of baby
  • Bad obstetric history
  • Mother with other medical disorders like heart disease or diabetes mellitus
  • Big baby (fetal macrosomia)

Cesarean delivery can be elective or emergency.

What is the Elective Cesarean section?

When the operation is done at pre arranged time during pregnancy to ensure the best outcome in terms of mother and baby it is called as elective or planned CS.

When should you plan for Elective Cesarean delivery?

In case of no other obstetric complication affecting the mother it is advisable to wait till completion of 37 weeks pregnancy. Hene planned cesarean can be performed in the last two weeks of gestation. I.e.one or two weeks prior to the expected date of delivery.

Benefits of Elective Cesarean delivery

  • Reduction in risk , disease or death of the newborn.
  • No pelvic floor dysfunction is beneficial to the mother.

Pre Cesarean antibiotics: Pre Cesarean antibiotics: Prophylactically single dose intravenous injection will be given to you 3o minutes prior to the surgery.

Will you feel anything??

You won't feel any pain during the C-section, although you may feel sensations like stretching and pressure. Most women are awake and simply numbed from the waist down using regional anesthesia (an epidural or Spinal Anesthesia) during a C-section.

That way, you are awake to see and hear their baby being born. A curtain will be over your abdomen during the surgery, but you may be able to take a peek as your baby is being delivered from your belly.

What to expect after Cesarean delivery?

  • Post surgery you will be advised to stay in bed for the first 12 to 24 hours.
  • Oral food is allowed after two to four hours,starting from liquids to gradually moving towards a soft diet.
  • Immediate breast feeding is allowed after cesarean delivery as soon as the patient is comfortable. It usually takes 12 to 24 hours for breast feeding to start. Hence it is better to avoid anxiety and take rest for the first few hours.
