Gynec cancers are a major reason for cancer related deaths in females.it includes

  • Cervical cancer (most common )- cancer arising from Cervix
  • Uterine cancer- cancer arising from Uterine body
  • Ovarian cancer-cancer arising from Ovaries primiraily
  • Vulval cancer- cancer involving vulva
  • Vaginal cancer- cancer with primary origin in vagina
  • Gestational trophoblastic neoplasm

The treatment of any gynec cancer depends on the stage of the disease at the time of diagnosis.

What Can Be The Symptoms Of Gynec Cancer?

  • Post coital bleeding
  • Leucorrhoea ,foul smelling vaginal discharge
  • Abnormal uterine bleeding
  • Post menopausal bleeding
  • Growth/ mass / ulcer on Vulva
  • Weight loss
  • Pain in abdomen / persistent bloating/ distension of abdomen

How can you be diagnosed with gynec cancer?

Symptoms are the leading key. But by the time symptoms develop the cancer may have spreaded and achieved an advanced stage. Hence YEARLY GYNEC CHECK UP is mandatory for all the females to early detect any suspicious or premalignant lesions.

Confirmation by cervical/endometrial biopsy/ vulval biopsy of suspicious lesion. Ovarian mass biopsy in an advanced stage helps confirm the malignancy.

Staging of gynec cancer includes

  • Clinical examination or Examination under Anesthesia
  • Schiller’s iodine test
  • MRI/CT scan Abdomen and Pelvis
  • Tumor markers: CA-125, CEA, CA19-9, HE4, S.BHCG, S. LDH, S. Inhibin
  • Occasional cystoscopy/ colonoscopy is required.

Management Includes:Multidisciplinary team approach

(1) Surgery

  • Radical Hysterectomy for cervical cancer
  • Staging laparotomy which includes (Total Abdominal hysterectomy and B/L Pelvic Lymph node Dissection omental biopsy +peritoneal sampling) for uterine /ovarian cancer in early stages
  • Radical / Modified Vulvectomy for Vulvar Cancer + Inguinal node dissection
  • Interval debulking surgery for ovarian cancer

Myths about gynecological cancers

  • Gynae cancers only affects older women: X
  • Fact: though it predominantly affects women after menopause, it can occur to young women as well.

  • There are no symptoms: x
  • Fact:many women experience symptoms which are non specific and therefore often ignored.

  • You can’t get gynecological cancer after a hysterectomy!!:
  • Fact:this surgery does not prevent development of cancer in other parts of reproductive system like vulva, vagina or ovaries

  • Pap test can pick u all gynec cancers: X
  • Fact:Pap test/ Liquid based cytology is only for detection of cervical cancer or pre invasive lesions of cervix.

How can you prevent cancer development?

  • Yearly gynec check up which includes clinical examination and trans vaginal ultrasonography
  • Every three yearly PAP test/ Liquid Based Cytology
  • Gardasil vaccination in girls >11 years age.

  • Monogamous relationship
