High risk pregnancy
High risk pregnancies are those pregnancies which are associated with other obstetric or medical conditions as comorbidities.
Examples of high risk pregnancy are
Pregnancy with mother having medical condition like
- Diabetes mellitus type1 / type2
- Gestational diabetes mellitus
- Chronic hypertension
- Preeclampsia/ Eclampsia
- Autoimmune diseases
- Viral hepatitis/ liver diseases
- Epilepsy or asthma
- Hypo/hyper thyroidisam
- Cardiovascular diseases like ASD,VSD, operated for Valvular Defects in childhood or with Prosthetic valve replacement.
- Blood disorders like :Sickle cell anemia, thalassemia etc.
- Chronic renal disease or transplanted kidneys.
Pregnancy with obstetric conditions Like
- Placenta Previa( Low lying Placenta)
- Placenta accreta
- Intrauterine growth restriction
- Past history of multiple abortions owing to cervical incomeptence
- Twins or triplet gestation
- Previous 2 cesarean sections or more
Why is the number of high risk pregnancies increasing ?
As the couple delay the planning of pregnancy owing to their focus on career and other matters of life, pregnancy planned after 30 years of age has higher chances of development of co-morbid conditions like gestational diabetes, gestational hypertension, obesity etc.
Due to lifestyle changes , obesity, PCOD many women are facing the problem of infertility and have to undergo IVF pregnancy , which in turn increases chances of twin pregnancy.
